Cánada se ha sumado a la lista de países con víctimas mortales por la fiebre porcina, integrada por México y EEUU. En este caso una mujer de Alberta, Canadá, que no había viajado a México.
CANADA DAILY. A patient who died last month in northern Alberta had a mild form of H1N1 flu, provincial health officials said Friday. The province's chief medical officer said the woman was in her thirties and had not traveled to Mexico, the centre of the flu outbreak.
This is the first fatality in Canada that has been linked to the influenza strain, which has hit 214 people in the country. All those cases had been reported mild.
Alberta health officials reiterated in a statement Friday that "it is not clear what role the H1N1 flu played in the fatality" but that it is being considered a "contributing factor."
Officials say the patient, who has not been identified, had chronic pre-existing medical conditions. The patient died April 28. A member of the patient's family had contracted the disease on May 5. Two days later, the Provincial Laboratory of Alberta confirmed that the deceased also had the same virus.
Canada has confirmed 214 cases of swine flu to date, but so far the virus has mostly been causing mild illness in patients. Only one confirmed patient -- a young girl from Edmonton -- has developed more serious illness from the virus. The girl is recovering in hospital.
